RESUMO

The development of new drugs is of utmost importance for the treatment of cancer. Vernonia scorpioides presents antiinflammatory and antitumoral effects. In this study, the investigation of Vernonia scorpioides afforded the hirsutinolide isolate, a mixture of sesquiterpene lactones and an unpublished polyacetylene. We report on the cytotoxic activity and the mechanism of cell death exhibited by the substances of Vernonia scorpioides against adenocarcinoma cell line (Hela), melanoma cells (B16F10), in comparison with fibroblast (L929). The induction of apoptosis was determined by DNA fragmentation, Anexin V-FITC and Caspase-3. This study also evaluated its potential genotoxicity, using the Commet assay. The results suggest that polyacetylene exhibits antiproliferative effects on Hela cells via apoptosis. All substances showed high levels of DNA damage
