RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the amplitude of the the temporomandibular joint sounds, by means of a computerized eletrosonograph; and the amplitude, on the saggital plane and deviations, on the frontal plane; through computerized kinesiograph on patients with temporomandibular disorders treated with occlusal splints. A group of 15 patients was studied, 3 males and 12 females, between 18 and 50 years-old, selected and sent to CETASE (Temporomanibular Disorders Treatment Center). The patients had painful symptoms of temporomandibular disorders, and were treated with occlusal splints, modified through the treatment, receiving incisor and canine guidance. Evaluations were carried out before, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after the occlusal splints placement. The results showed a statistically significant difference higher amplitude on maximal open mouth. For the lateral deviations, both right and left, a reduction was noticed, however, there were no statistical significant differences. For the amplitude of the temporomandibular noises, a reduction was noticed, h oweve r, only the left joint presented statistical significant differences. In conclusion, the occlusal splints proved to be effective in the temporomandibular disorders treatment, regarding the amplitude on maximal open mouth and on the reduction of joint noises
