RESUMO

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection has a continuous and progressive course. Opportunistic agents frequently cause several diseases. The effect the disease has on the Central Nervous System often leads to functional disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate and describe functional static activities in a group of patients with AIDS and toxoplasmic encephalitis. All of them had functional disabilities and rehabilitation was achieved by the application ofProprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation method. Eighteen patients with AIDS were observed and clinically classified as C3 by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) score. Inpatients were treated and evaluated once a day until discharge and twice a week afterwards, for three months. Physical evaluation was done using DURlGON et aI. functional activity scale (1998). It was used to evaluate the capacity of staying in seated and orthostatic positions, from supine one. The ability to control weight support components while other corporal segments undertake some activities was evaluated. After this evaluation, patients were treated with adequate drugs by medical staff and the physiotherapeutic treatment was continued in order to increase their ability to move and be stable in seated and orthostatic positions. 604 evaluations of static functional activities and physiotherapy treatment sessions were done. In the initial evaluation, only four ofthe eighteen observed patients achieved the maximum score in the sitting position. From the thirtieth day of treatment, thirteen patients achieved the maximum score and stayed the same until the end. However, when evaluated in the standig position, none of the patients managed to stay on their feet long enough to be admitted. From the thirtieth day of physiotherapy treatment, twelve patientes achieved the maximal score for the standing position and stayed tha same until the end ofthe study
