RESUMO

The Port of Itajaí is the Brazils second largest port in container movement and export, which characterizes it as a ballast water receiver, being this one of the main vectors for the introduction of exotic species. The present work presents an estimate of the volume unballasted in Itajaí, its origin, and an analysis of risk of the supplying ports of the ballast. Also presents the applicable mitigation measures for the regional context. The analysis of unballast was carried with the development of an equation to estimate the unballasted/ballast and a method of risk analysis, based on the specific conditions of the port of Itajaí with the data available in 2003. The estimated volume of unballast for 2003 was 761.048m , most of it which had the ballast originating in other Brazilian ports. Thus, the majority of this ballast did not represent oceanic exchange. Consequently, the ports with highest risk are the Brazilian ports, followed by South American (except Brazil), African, Caribbean and European ports. Under these conditions, the Port of Itajaí is subjected to the occurrence of bioinvasions with serious socio-economic and environmental consequences, not only in the port area, but also in the surrounding region
