RESUMO

The objectives of this research were to identify reliable methods to evaluate the physiological potential of cucumber seeds, verify the relationship between seed physiological potential and field performance, as well as to define a suitable procedures for seed priming, drying and storage. The study was conducted in two experimental phases using seed lots of cultivars Safira and Joia. The first phase comprised the selection of procedures for seed physiological potential assessment by germination, field emergence, controlled deterioration, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity and potassium leakage tests. On the second phase different priming and drying methods were evaluated, as well seed behavior during storage and field plant performance. Results indicated that the electrical conductivity (50 seeds/ 100 ml of water/ 12 and 16h), the controlled deterioration (24% water content/ 48h/ 45ºC) and the traditional and saturated salt accelerated aging (41ºC for 96h) tests are sensitive to differences in the physiological quality of cucumber seed lots. Seed osmopriming between sheets of paper towel moistened with -0.2 MPa PEG solution is efficient for cucumber seeds, affecting primarily the speed than the percentage seed germination. The rapid drying method do not revert the benefits achieved with priming treatments. It was observed a decline in the percentage and speed of germination during the storage period, but the priming benefits were maintained. Seed priming favored seedling dry matter mass but these effects were not verified regarding fruit production.
