RESUMO
Mycoses are serious public health concern specially in subtropical and tropical regions with dermatophytes and yeast infections being the most common pathogens. This work was undertaken in order to test whether essential oils extracted from the leaves of Croton species (Croton nepetaefolius, Croton argyrophylloides and Croton zehntneri) or from Lippia sidoides would represent a potential therapeutic alternative for this infectious threats. Thase plants are used in the folk medicine to treat dermatological problems and in the present study were tested them in vitro against several strains of Microsporum canis, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis e Malassezia pachydermatis and also evaluated for its acute and sub-chronic toxicological effects. The chemical constituents of the essential oils were determined by GL-Chromatography coupled to mass espectroscopy. The essential oils obtained from Croton nepetaefolius and Croton argyrophylloides were effective only against M. canis while the essential oils of Croton zehntneri and Lippia sidoides were effective against all tested strains in a dose-related way. Lippia sidoides was the most efficient being at the higher doses used (i.e. 75 and 100 mg/mL) as effective as the positive controls used griseofulvin for M. canis, itraconazol for M. pachydermatis and amphotericin B. Lippia sidoides essential oil at these doses sometimes completely inhibited fungi growth. This essential oil has thymol (59.6%) and caryophyllene (10.6%) as major constituents. The acute administration of all essential oils up to 3 g/Kg by the oral route to mice was devoided of overt toxicity. The oral administration of 100 mg/Kg to rats during 30 days did not induce histopathological, haemathological or serum biochemical alterations. Therefore, due to its high efficacy and low toxicity the essential oils of Croton zehntneri and Lippia sidoides are promising drugs in the search of new antifungal drugs.
