RESUMO

This study was undertaken to evaluate the dysphonic teachers` quality of life, through the use of the Voice-Related Quality of Life Protocol (V-RQOL), translated in Brazil as Protocolo de Qualidade de Vida em Voz (QVV). This validated outcomes instrument evaluates the physical and socio-emotional domains of individuals` quality of life that experience voice disorders. A total of 51 teachers participated in this study, with vocal complaints, from middle, high and graduate schools. A number of 7 teachers were selected among a speech therapist`s patients and 44 teachers were chosen on visits to 12 local schools, both private or public, in Fortaleza, Ceará, between June and November, 2006. The age group varied from 19 to 60 years old. The majority of the interviewees was constituted by women (40 schoolmistresses). Besides the V-RQOL, an additional questionnaire of 4 questions related to teachers` professional activities and the care of voice disorder was included. The physical score was 62,4 , the socio-emotional score was 85,1 and the final score was 71,5. The physical parameter was the most damaged to the teachers` quality of life with dysphonia. The questions on physical score related to the phonatory system coordination (question 2) and the challenge in speaking out loud or to be listened in noisy environments (question 1) were the ones which presented the biggest proportions in answers 3, 4 and 5, reflecting the worst responses in this domain. The answers to the 4 additional questions indicated that a number of teachers do not have healthy speech habits nor were well-informed about the subject during their graduation course, what turns difficult to control the possibility of dysphonia. This essay has noticed that speech problems have a negative impact on the teachers` quality of life and this impact is little noticeable among them. According to the results, it is essential a vocal health promotion through specific actions.
