RESUMO

Inducing pain and evaluating pain sensations in ethically viable ways have always been a challenging task for those conducting experimental research in Psychology and behavioral areas. This study has evaluated the nociceptive thresholds and the subjective experience of pain in 29 patients diagnosed with Panic Disorder and 29 healthy controls. The participants were submitted to nociceptive stimulation during an experimental procedure involving cold pressor pain, the Cold Pressor Test, which consisted of immersing their hands and fore arm into cold water at the temperature of 7C. The hand withdrawal latency and the subjective experience of pain, assessed through the Brazilian version of the short McGill Pain Questionnaire were used to measure pain. Similar hand withdrawal latencies were observed for the two groups, with higher McGill Pain Questionnaire scores for subjective experience of acute pain in the Panic Disorder group. The results were discussed in terms of the utility of the Cold Pressor Test as a model of cold pain in experimental research as well as in terms of the affective and sensory aspects of pain in patients diagnosed with Anxiety and Panic Disorders.
