RESUMO

With the recuperation of the national railroad system in mind, a study of the pathological phenomena that occur in metallic railroad bridges was performed. These phenomena, such as: corrosion, fatigue cracks, loose connections and deformation and/or excessive displacement of the structural elements, are the principal factors responsible for bridge intervention and interdiction. This is a worldwide problem and involves high maintenance and recuperation costs for the damaged structural elements, especially when there is no periodical prevention. In various countries, research is being performed, where methods and procedures for the inspection and evaluation of old bridges are being proposed and applied. In Brazil, however, research has fallen behind and very little has been published on this subject. It was the objective of this study to register all the metallic railroad bridges found in the study area. These were cataloged according to the pathologies found in their structures. Also, an inspection method for metallic railroad bridges was elaborated, based on the methods used for railroad bridges built with reinforced concrete. Finally, a numerical analysis was performed for the bridges of this study. This way, it was possible to evaluate the structural integrity of each and the efficiency of the proposed structural reinforcement. For this to be feasible, in situ data was collected by means of performing a visual inspection, taking physical measurements and registering situations with photographs. Samples of the structural elements were also taken for chemical composition determination, mechanical strain resistance test performance, metalgraphic and corrosion analyses
