RESUMO

Fossil fuels are relatively inert maintaining their essential characteristics during tankage even for long periods. On the other hand, biodiesel degrades during storage. The changes that occur during the tankage can be harmful to the fuel injection systems. Therefore, it is of great importance to know the oxidation stability of the bio-oil as obtained by the pyrolysis and the maximum time it can be stored. Bio-oil has a great potential to be used as a fuel by isolated communities in the Amazon Rain Forest and the Brazilian northeast semi-arid, since for its production one needs no raw material other than fats or oils and a source of heat. In this sense, this work aimed to study the stability of the biofuel produced by the pyrolysis of soybean oil. The bio-oil was tanked during six months in three different types of tanks at room temperature. Samples were collected at regular periods of time and their physical-chemical parameters such as distillation curve, viscosity, flash point, cetane index, copper corrosion, weight loss measurements, density at 20C, residual carbon, acid index, and oxidative stability analysis were obtained. Gas chromatography and infrared spectroscopy analysis of samples were also performed in order to determine the bio-oil composition during the storage. Despite the changes on the physical-chemical parameter during tankage, the majority of the results remained within the limits specified by ANP for diesel. The exception was the residual carbon that exceeded the limits. The oxidation stability tests showed that the soybean bio-oil is likely to be more stable than the soybean biodiesel. The results have also shown that the differences in the materials of the thanks used for bio-oil storage did not interfere in the evaluation of the bio-oil stability parameters.
