RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the functional capacity of workers in an electric materials plant and its association with individual and occupational characteristics.METHOD: This is a cross-sectional survey with 360 workers from the technical and production sector of a industry of electric materials. Three self-completed questionnaires were used to collect information on demographic, social-economic, occupational, and life style variables, the Work Ability Index (WAI), and the Nordic Questionnaire of Musculoskeletal Symptoms. Poisson regression models were used to estimate the crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios (PR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI95%).RESULTS: 337 workers took part in the survey. Of these, 51.6% were women, 42.1% were 20 and 29 years old, and 66.2% were from the production lines. The prevalence of reduced work ability was of 19% (CI95% 15%-23%) and the musculoskeletal symptoms related to work was of 47.5% (CI95% 42%-53%). Multivariate analyses showed that the reduced work ability capacity was associated with lower practice of physical activity (PR=1.93; CI95% 1.07-3.46; p=0.027), higher musculoskeletal symptoms related to work (RP= 4.36; CI95% 2.38 8.00; p<0.001); and with the risky work sector (RP=2.29; CI95% 1.20-4.35; p=0.011).CONCLUSIONS: Workers should be encouraged to get involved in physical activities. Measures that promote health related working conditions and reduce risk factors for the musculoskeletal disorder should be adopted by the industry so that the functional capacity of workers can be improved
