RESUMO
Papillomaviruses (PV) are viruses that contain double strand DNA and can infect the squamous epithellium of the skin and mucosa. There are 10 different types of BPV (BPV-1 to 10) and they can cause serious diseases in dairy herds or cutting, creating great economic losses to farmers in Brazil and other countries. The presence of BPV has been detected in reproductive tissues and body fluids, such as peripheral blood, blood plasma, oocytes, ovary, uterus, the cells cumullus, uterine fluids, semen and sperm, placenta and amniotic fluid. Presumptive diagnosis of the infection has been made based on histological findings of the lesions and alterations in cell morphology. Conclusive diagnosis has been obtained by identification of viral DNA in tissue fragments using techniques such as Southern blot and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This study aimed to evaluate the presence of BPV, using the PCR technique, in semen of bulls (Bos taurus) marketed in the state of Pernambuco and evaluate the association pf BPV and quality of semen. An set of primers for general detection of PV and specifics types of BPV1-6 was used in samples of fresh semen and sperm from commercial bulls of the breed Gir Leiteiro. The quality of semen was evaluated by the parameters of motility, vitality, verifying the integrity acrosome and integrity of DNA. It was detected the presence of DNA of BPV in 100% of samples of semen analyzed. The most frequent type virus was the BPV-2, followed by BPV-3 and BPV-4. The presence of BPV did not affect the semen analysis. These results demonstrate the importance of studying in better details the relationship between BPV and semen. Given the widespread use, artificial insemination with BPV contaminated sperm can have similar importance as the sexual route to the viral dispersion in the herd.
