RESUMO

The gastrointestinal nematodes control of small ruminants has been realized by synthetic anthelmintics. However, the development of resistance required research of control alternatives. Among these alternatives is the use of medicinal plants rich in condensed tannins. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of Cocos nucifera fruit against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The ethyl acetate extract obtained from the liquid of green coconut husk fiber (LGCHF) was submitted to chemistry analysis, toxicological and anthelmintic efficacy tests. The chemistry analysis was realized by phytochemical tests and tannin quantification. The in vitro efficacy was determined through egg hatching and larval development tests with Haemonchus contortus using extract concentrations that ranged from 0.31 to 5 mg ml-1 and from 5 to 80 mg ml-1, respectively. The acute toxicity was determinated after administration on mice. The controlled test was used to evaluate in vivo efficacy. In this experiment, sheep infected with gastrointestinal nematodes were divided into groups (n = 6): G1 - 400 mg kg-1 extract, G2 - 0.2 mg kg-1 Cydectin and G3 - 3% DMSO. The results of in vitro and in vivo tests were analyzed by ANOVA and submitted to Tukey and Kruskal-Wallis tests, respectively (P<0.05). The phytochemical analysis revealed catechins, condensed tannins, flavonoids and steroids. The quantification of tannins was 25.87%. At the highest concentrations, the extract efficacy was 100% on egg hatching and 99.77% on larval development. No oral toxicity was demonstrated, but intraperitoneally the extract LD10 and LD50 were 650 and 1.233,99 mg kg-1, respectively. In controlled test, the extract efficacy did not differ from 3% DMSO. In spite of the significant results in vitro, the ethyl acetate extract obtained from the LGCHF showed no activity against sheep gastrointestinal nematodes.
