Associação entre religiosidade e o uso de álcool na população brasileira

RESUMO

A large number of studies point to the impact of religiosity on health and alcohol use. Yet, there is a paucity of data from studies with nationally representative samples. Objectives: Investigate the relationships between alcohol intake and religiosity dimensions in the Brazilian population. Method: Cross-sectional study of a representative sample of the Brazilian population (n=3,007), obtained from a probabilistic sample of 143 cities. The study investigated religious involvement (Organizational Religiosity: frequency of attendance to religious services; Subjective: how important for the individual religion is; Religious Affiliation) and alcohol use patterns (lifetime use, binge drinking, dependence/abuse). Binomial logistic regressions controlling for sociodemographic variables were made. Results: Religious affiliation and frequency of attendance to religious services were significantly associated with alcoholic beverage use, binge drinking and abuse/dependence. The importance attributed to religion did not show any association when other variables were controlled for in the model. Individuals who never attended religious services were twice as likely to present lifetime alcohol use, binge drink or develop abuse or dependence. Evangelicals and Protestants were less likely to drink alcohol than Catholics. Not belonging to any religious denomination was associated with a greater likelihood of alcohol dependence or abuse than being a Catholic. (OR=2.4) Conclusions: The models showed a great association of frequency of attendance to religious services and religious affiliation with alcohol use. The stated importance of religion was not significant when controlled for demographic features and the two other religiosity dimensions
