RESUMO

Assisted reproduction has made possible the beginning of the reproductive process outside the human body. The manipulation and circulation of embryos, eggs, sperm, and uterus displacement with the so called gestacional surrogacy have led to new social experiences. This work investigates the discourses of the main social actors involved in the issues raised by those technological innovations that concern parenting within the assisted reproductive field in Brazil. In such field of new assisted reproductive technologies, future fathers and mothers, doctors, legislators, feminists, bioethicists among other social actors have had do deal with issues related to reproductive cells, frozen embryos children genetically related or not to their parents. Such a picture has created or updated discourses concerning matherhood, fatherhood, reproduction, individual rights, parental rights as well as sexual and reproductive rights, rooted in specific views on gender, class and sexuality relations. Those discourses are also observed as a kind of subjectivity generated by scientific innovations that embrace new moral frontiers. The theoretical approach originates in sociological traditional theories and the feminist theory. The research was based on documental research bout the legislative debates on assisted reproduction regulation and on an online discussion group about infertility. Those various sources of analysis constitute a mosaic from which emerge voices and dilemmas related to social ideals of family. The thesis identifies tensions and conflicts between aspects of continuity and disruption, normalization and subversion, autonomy and subjection, invention and reproduction. The discourses on motherhood and fatherhood are reinvented, updated and reinscribed in a society of fabricated risk where one can find reproductive hierarchies imposed and established.
