RESUMO

This dissertation is a study of a technical innovation in an extractive based economy: the so called "vegetable leather" (cotton covered of latex) in the first Extractivist Reserve of Brazil, the Upper Juruá Extractivist Reserve, Acre. It aim to studyeconomical, social and environrnental indicators of the vegetable leather production. This three-dimensional approach will be driven through the combination of a research of the productive process and of the forest management from a development and conservation perspective (sustainable development) combined with a etnographic description of the rubber plantations (seringais). It is intended to contribute to the discussion of the economical viability of non-timber forest products, its contribution for the development of the forest populations inhabitants and for the conservation of the environment where they tive.
