RESUMO

Taking up fragments of conversation between mothers and their children, De Lemos, C. brought into the field of language acquisition the essentiality of the otherness maternal interpretation to the children verbal productions in the early moments of the linguistic course. Based on this perspective, this research attempted to reflect about the peculiar role of the otherness that is, the one who takes care of the sheltered children in their process of language acquisition. Due to the fact that in this theoretical perspective the role of the mother during the process of language acquisition is highly emphasized, to investigate the peculiar role of the children caretaker in this process, it became a necessary reference to this data. Thus, to reflect about the peculiar role of the caretaker in the process of language acquisition a longitudinal investigation was realized in a sheltered institution, for 11 months, where, every two weeks, the dialogues among three children and the person who took care of them (the caretaker) were recorded. In order to analyze these dialogues the following sequence was observed: first, it was selected childrens uncommon verbal production which provoked amazement to both the caretaker and the researcher; second, it was analyzed the manner that is, how the caretaker answered to the fragments uttered by the children and the relationship between some infantile verbal production and other expressions used by the adult/caretaker in flaw of the dialogues. Finally, fragments of conversations between children and their mothers, analyzed according De Lemos, C. theoretical assumptions, were used as reference to discuss the differences in the linguistic process of the sheltered children. Therefore, this investigation pointed out to the process of language acquisition of these children who live in shelters it has marks of singularity because the caretaker assumes this peculiar role in the dialogues with these children and, consequently, with their linguistic experience as well
