RESUMO

This research investigates the process involved in the elaboration, implementation and evaluation of teaching materiaIs for Portuguese as a second language in Brazil, exploiting historical-cultural information. The objective was to produce materiaIs which supplies information about the country and generates an inter-cultural experience of language in use in the classroom, theoretically based on communicative approach. The research arose from a previous study of five books for teaching Portuguese for foreigners published by the Brazilian editors, in which a teaching approach favoring formal aspects of language predominate, rather than actuallanguage use procedures in the classroom. This research is of an ethnographic nature and was conducted by intervention in the form of material developed for a group of thirteen foreign students of ten different nationalities enrolled in a special thirty-hour course. These materiaIs were not in themselves self-suficient for the teaching-Iearning of the language, but rather dependent on the teacher s and the student s input to stimulate communicative interaction, since in previous research, teaching materiaIs alone have been judged to be inadequate for the teaching of a foreign language. The results of this study use an interpretative process to show how the teacher s and the students input are complementary and may be considered "material". This research also evaluated the feasibility of including Brazilian culture in the teaching of Portuguese as a second language as well as attempting to encourage teachers to create their own materiaIs based in their own experience and knowledge about the culture
