RESUMO
Separation of variables is adequately understood and extended by making use of tensor products. We consider linear transformations admitting tensor decompositions and some recent applications in numerical analysis (Beylkin s algorithm). The examples concern the discretization of the Laplacian on rectangular meshes, its spectral properties and functional calculus, with emphasis on its sign function.
