RESUMO

To locate and, if possibly, delimitate the presence of underground saline saturated horizons at Colonia Lloveras, 25 de Mayo department in San Juan province, Argentine Republic; a geoelectric research using the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) method has been programmed and actually carried out. A first step consisted on the execution of 10 V.E.S. as evenly distributed as possible, as was permitted by topographical conditions in the area. In the case of Colonia Agrícola Lloveras, previous studies point to the existence of saline saturated layers in the subsoil, a problem which has already affected superficial areas. The methodology applied, with geological support, made it possible to determine the location, extension and whenever possible, the thickness of saline or polluting layers in the subsoil; to infer their influence in the deterioration of water quality. Starting from the calculated theoretical models of the 10 V.E.S., three geolectrical profiles were adjusted and distributed in a way suitable to make a global modelling of the studied area. The existence of great lateral variations of true resistivities (ohm.m) has been identified, partly due to the variation of particulate size provoked by the fact that the entire region is alluvial. Areas of fine material (such as clay and / or mud, fine sand) alternate with alluvium (sands). In addition, there is saltpeter at surface level (which can actually be seen in several places). In this situation, it is prominent an area of maximum electrical conductivity situated westwards and southwards. Finally, in general, this is an area drained by streams and sediments of San Juan and Mendoza rivers. There are marshes, swamps and lagoons, known as "Lagunas de Guanacache".
