RESUMO

Studies about sediment transport processes that occur in the Campos Basin are of great importance, since they can contribute for example to improve the comprehension of how the sedimentary deposits, that are potential oil reservoirs, take form or to provide elements that can help to understand the changes in marine bed forms on areas where submarine pipelines were installed. This work is concerned with the assessment of the total sediment transport (bed load and suspended load transport) that occur in the bottom boundary layer. Four distinct spots, located at different water depths in Campos Basin Continental Shelf near Cape S. Tomà (22ÂS) were investigated. A 1-D parametric model was adapted in order to calculate the sediment transport making use of waves and current data simultaneously acquired. Additionally, local data of sediment size, bed forms and sea water term haline properties were considered. The achieved results made it evident that the current direction is decisive on the sediment transport direction. The dominant direction of the resultant transport was coherent with the bed forms found in neighboring areas. It was also observed that the influence of the waves, providing sediments for being carried out by suspension, diminishes when the water depth increases. It was concluded that the model is capable of providing acceptable results when compared to the sediment transport behavior expected for that region
