RESUMO

Behind the scene of a daily news broadcast, there is the work of an entire team; however, the final product reaches the viewers through the performance of only a few individuals, by means of an immediate communication vehicle, which is capable of amplifying the smallest details. OBJECTIVES: To verify the effects of a speech therapy program with television journalists, describing its positive and negative aspects in the opinion of the participants, and verifying viewer judgments of each journalists best performance according to the situation before or after intervention , and to verify if there are differences according to age and gender, from the judgment of each separate journalist. METHODS: The subjects of the study were six journalists from a university broadcasting station. Initially, an investigation of the occupational context took place, as well as an assessment of the subjects communication needs. This process involved the filling out of an occupationally directed spoken-voice questionnaire, speech therapeutic evaluation of the subjects performances done by analysis of individual video recordings and on-the-spot observations. Then, the subjects were video-taped while reading, pretending to be in a news broadcasting situation. They were then submitted to a speech therapy program, which was developed with basis on the subjects needs. The program consisted of four meetings, each lasting two hours and thirty minutes. After the end of the program, the journalists were video-taped for a second time, under the same conditions as they had been previously, before the beginning of the intervention. The recorded pre and post-program material was randomly edited and the order of appearances determined by an intra-subject draw. Subsequently, the journalists described the positive and negative aspects of the intervention program. Finally, the edited material was shown to 50 adult viewers, who were asked to watch each individuals pre and post-program performance and therefore chose the best one or state if both were unchanged. RESULTS: The positive aspects pointed out by the subjects in decreasing order were: self-awareness and awareness of others; knowledge of specific techniques; drills of in-studio and off situations; clear-speech techniques; vocal health knowledge; reinforcement of previously known techniques; knowledge of vocal-warming techniques; and techniques that privilege non-verbal communication resources. The negative aspects were: time restraints; little material for self-evaluation; small individual attention; inadequate timing of the program; and participants difficulties in managing schedules in order to find time in common to take part in the program. It was perceived that of the six subjects, four (T1: p=<0,009; T4: p=0,026; T5: p=0,023; e T6: p= <0,001) show a statistically significant preference for the post-intervention, in the viewers opinion. Considering the viewers judgment regarding gender, there was significant difference in T6s evaluation, in favor of the male gender (p=0,042). Regarding age, T5s evaluation was significantly in favor of the younger journalists (p=0,040). CONCLUSION: The two main positive aspects of the program, as related by the participants were selfawareness and awareness of others, and increased knowledge of specific techniques. The main negative aspect was that the program was the programs time restraints. Four of the six journalists had statistically significant percentages of viewer preferences of the post-intervention recording; which demonstrates the positive effects of speech therapeutic intervention; and that, for the majority of the analyzed journalists, there was no prevalence of variables of gender and age in viewers preference
