RESUMO

This work presents an experimental analysis on the use of error correcting codes in optical communication systems, specifically by means of the Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique. Two electronic modules were designed and assembled during the experimental stages of the work - a coding and decoding module, which uses the Reed-Solomon RS (255,241) code, and a driver module for direct modulation of a DFB laser diode, with automatic temperature and optical power control. The objective of the experimental analysis was the investigation of the FEC technique performance on WDM and single channel transmission systems, in the presence of noise and distortions caused by propagating effects in the fiber, as the chromatic dispersion, four wave mixing and modulation instability. The experimental results were verified in a real telecommunication operator environment, improving the performance of a former non-viable long reach optical communication system.
