RESUMO

The failure of the two dental arcades to occlude, commonly in a transversal way, is known as Lateral or Posterior Crossbite. The aim of this work was to evaluate the correlation between the orthodontic correction of the posterior crossbite, the factors of caries predisposition and the activity pattern of the anterior Masseter and Temporal muscles. Twenty children of both genders, between 7 and 9 years of age, were analyzed ( approved of committee of ethics FOP-UNlCAMP). These children showed posterior crossbite malocclusion, which was corrected by using removable orthodontic appliances. Factors related to dental caries risks were analyzed in the following periods: Before the placement of the appliance; One month after the use of the appliance; Immediately after the crossbite correction and one month after the appliance removal.
