RESUMO

The Osamu Utsumi belongs to Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB), located in Caldas/MG, operated from 1982 to 1995, when the complete suspension of mining activities a processing of the uranium ore took place. Since then, the mine has an active maintaining system, which focus is the treatment of the acid drainage from the pit, waste dumps (locally called bota-fora) and tailings dam. Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs at the Osamu Utsumi Mine by natural oxidation of exposed metallic sulphites in contact with water and oxygen, being today, the most relevant liability, from both environment and cost involved with its neutralization point of view. In December, 2004, INB has signed an agreement to prepare and present a closure in attempt to IBAMA and CNEN requirements. At that time several studies are in place in order to subsidise the preparation of the closure plan. This dissertation searched for the best possible alternative for closing the Bota-fora BF-4, due its AMD generation potential, using the Multiple Account Analysis (MAA) methodology. Three alternatives were considered in this study. The alternative 1 refers to maintain the active treatment conditions, with include pumping the BF-4 drainage to the pit and subsequently pumping from there to effluent treatment plant to pH neutralization, hydroxides precipitation and disposition in the pit lake. The alternative 2 focuses on re-sloping and covering with impervious material the BF-4 in order to minimize and eliminate the AMD. The alternative 3 deals with the complete dismantling of the BF-4 and disposition of the waste in the flooded pit. According to MAA results, the alternative 3 appears to be most suitable option, in long-term, for the AMD problem.
