RESUMO

The issue concerning global warming has been attracting attention and it has been debated more often in the scientific field and the society, due to the environmental impact attributed to climate change. The international organizations search for the implantation of politics and measures aiming at resisting the degradation and reducing the environmental impact supposedly created by human activities, especially the ones which result from carbon dioxide emissions. However, there still remains skepticism regarding the reliability of the data presented by the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) of United Nations Organization (UN) and if the anthropogenic emissions are really the cause of the global warming. Some Geography school books approach the subject in an equivocal manner showing humankind as directly responsible for global warming, ignoring authors and researchers, who suggest a more careful approach regarding the subject. They sustain that scientific research is still necessary in order to advance the analysis and that the data, presented up to now, do not have the credibility to confirm the anthropogenic influence on the change of the global climate. Therefore, Grade School Geography teaching is essential to help youngsters to broaden their view regarding the climate change, its causes and its consequences in face of other viewpoints. As the uncertainties about the most broadcasted scientific research are presented in this dissertation, this research intends to verify how the subject is transmitted to the students, through an analysis of the Grade School Geography books approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Education for the period between 2005 and 2008.
