RESUMO

The following work comprises a detailed scale study of impacts generated by landuse practices on the geomorphological systems of an estuarine area. The main goals were the identification and mapping of impacted areas in the estuary of the Itapessoca river, Municipality of Goiana, State of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. The adopted theoretical framework in the pursuit of the research was âecodynamicsâ. This approach was taken as an integrating perspective, which permits the construction of environmental fragility indexes, represented as geographical systems and subject to detailed mapping. The research was split into two phases: the exploratory one, and the data gathering, observational phase. The analyses were constrained by the following parameters: superficial structure of the landscape, land use, vegetation cover and surface processes. Three focus areas were chosen for the mapping and limited by the given UTM coordinates (0291055/9149958 and 0291076/9149839), focus area 1; (0297922/9152049 and 029708/9151984) focus area 2; and (209760/9152069 and 0297730/ 9151971) for the third focus area. Information was synthesized in four aggregating levels, per se: 1 (stability); 2 (attenuated instability); 3 (moderate instability); 4 (strong instability). A true rupture of the morphodynamics was identified in all studied areas, by the correlation of stabilizing factors. The current dynamics of the geo-systems, treated like focus areas, was regarded as a consequence of the instability of surface covers, which is expressed in the physical dynamics of the areas as a consequence of human induced practices
