RESUMO

Brazil has been going through a phase of demographic transition, defined by a progressive aging of the population. Hearing disability is among the principal sensory alterations related to aging. The aging and hearing disability bring physical, psychological and social changes in peoples life, causing problems to the communication and home environment. This work had as objective verify the effectiveness of the auditory inventory for the elderly, adapted questionary, in a group of elders (aged upper to 60), with and without auditory complain!s, members of the third age groups in Uberaba, MG, and compare the results from the questionary with the ones from the hearing tests. To get to this goal, 94 elders were required, both genders, aged from 60 to 90 divided into 2 groups (47 each). In the first group there were people without auditory complaints and, at the second one people with auditory complaints. The result showed us that in the first group, old people without auditories complaints, 30 (63, 9%) had the effectiveness from the questionary and to 17 (36,1%) it wasn t effective. At the second group (elderly with auditories complaints), it was effective in 40 (85,1%), and it wasn t only in 7 (14,9%). According to statistical analysis, in both groups, the effectiveless of the questionnaire was above the effectless. The statistical analysis showed that the IAPI (hearing test for the elderly) was a questionnaire able to detect loss of hearing in old people, helping not only those who have never realized hearing problems but also and the ones who noticed the problem to hear, but, haven t looked for especial treatment. We hope this work will be able to alert the health professionals who deal with elders, and also the importance of an action that has a focus on prevention, trying to detect hearing disabilities earlier, aim for a increase of physical and mental man s health. We still would like to mention the necessity of new researches in this area, trying to provide our old fellow a replace in the society and giving them a better quality of life
