RESUMO

The present study evaluates the acuracy of the otomicroscopy in the diagnosis of myringosclerosis in rats. Otitis media was induced by transtympanic inoculation of Streptococcus pneumoniae into the right middle ear of 25 Wistar rats weighting 200 to 400 g. They were submitted to otomicroscopy every two weeks, and, after 8 weeks, they were sacrificed for hystologic studies of their tympanic membranes. At otomicroscopy, the following aspects could be distinguished: normal, mild opacification and severe opacification. At hystologic specimens, five stages of the inflamatory process were considered: stages 1 (exsudation), 2 (granulation), 3 (fibrosis), 4 (hialinization), and 5 (metaplasia). Myringosclerosis was considered to be present at otomicroscopy and hystology in the cases of severe opacification and stages 4 or 5, respectivelly. The abnormalities found on the ratsâ tympanic membranes were compared with the hystologic data, showing an agreement between the two methods, and demonstrating that otomicroscopy has good specificity and sensitivity for the diagnosis of myringosclerosis
