RESUMO

Chronic skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sun radiation can cause multiple damages the skin depending on the amount, form of UV radiation and type of individuals exposed. Damages include sunburn, oxidative stress and foto aging. Sunscreen can help to prevent serious diseases such as skin cancer, by minimizing cutaneous aggression. In this way, snscreen has a great importance on public health. Sources of natural antioxidants provide new possibilities for treatment and prevention of diseases caused by UV radiation. The Brazilian flora is rich in medicinal plants, which are antioxidants widely found. The antioxidant activity of anacardic acids, found in Anacardium occidentale, comes, in large part, from its ability to inhibit various oxidative enzymes. Among them, the xanthine oxidase. These oxidases produce free radicals in the human body. In the development of sunscreens, the formulator search define a formulation that makes the best use of raw materials, streamlining the qualitative and quantitative of each item with the purpose of obtaining a suitable product within the parameters of efficiency, safety, cost / benefit and acceptance by the consumer. So, through this study, it can be shown that the extract from Anacardium occidentale can potentiate the action of the UVB filters (290 to 320 nm) and reduce possible microbial contamination in cosmetic preparations, assisting in their conservation. Therefore, this extract was considered a raw material of plant origin versatile for cosmetic formulators
