RESUMO

The personal social network is build by people who live with the subject in their daily reality and those who are available to contact. This network has an outstanding importance in the life of those from popular classes, in an even enhanced way when it refers to people with great limitations, as it is the case of many people with physical disability. In this context, the social network becomes fundamental as to lessen the difficulties that these people face as regards the set of limitations inflicted by the disability, and the socio-economical context in which they take part, urging as well the need for the professionals who act in the basic care services make use of these networks support. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the personal social networks value in Popular Education in Health practice, encouraging the interaction between the professionals and the social networks, as concerns the production of more intense health actions for the physical disabled people, who belong to popular classes. Hence, an action-research with two phases was developed: in the first one, a mapping of the social networks of disabled people was done by means of semi-structured interviews, as well as the making up of the disabled peoples history; in the second phase, the social networks activation/mobilization through meetings and personal contacts was accomplished. Apart from the interviews, the data were collected by records in a research diary. The data analysis was based on thematic units which were organized in categories. Thus, results showed the existing difference between the social networks of the people who belong to the same social class and cope with the same problems, as well as the erosion which occurs in the social network of the disabled ones who live alongside the urban areas, imposing them diverse degrees of isolation and making the rehabilitation process difficult. The isolation between the researched people may be attributed to several factors, and the social network mobilization presents itself as an important possibility to overcome this condition and to collaborate with these subjects organizations, rescuing their self-esteem and providing autonomy. The practices of Popular Education in Health are a very fertile ground for the work with the social networks. For this reason, the social network notion can contribute to widen the actions of Popular Education in Health, pointing out intervention ways which enable a major practical and theoretical visibility of the social networks in these actions, so that the basic care services can be more dynamic.
