RESUMO

Among several malocclusion forms is the Class 111 malocclusion, which may be dental or skeletal. As decisive characteristic, the skeletal Class 111 malocclusion shows the bad relantionship between the osseous bases that may be the result of deficient evolution of the maxillary, excessive growth of the mandible, or even both. For these kinds of malocclusion, the orthognathic surgery is indicated (as medical treatment), when the orthodontist and the surgeon must work together, not only in order to aim at aesthetic improvement, but functional improvement, as well, with stability of the obtained results. The purpose of the present study went evaluate the cephalometrics alterations as results of the orthodontic-surgical treatment, on patients presenting vertical problems, and with skeletal Class 111 malocclusion. The essay consisted of twenty-four lateral cephalometric radiographs of twelve adult Brazilian leucoderm patients (six male and six female), with the average age of 27.2 years-old, which were obtained before the surgery and at least one year after it. Each x-ray was traced three times, in order to minimize plan errors and also to consider the medium values for each cephalometric greatness. The results showed significant statistics on to the test "t" of Student (p<0.05) and Wilcoxon (p<0.05), in the two appraised moments, for FMA, with a difference -3.01°, FMIA with 4.58°, occlusal plane with -1.03°, SNA with 3.54°, ANB with 4.36°, SNGoGn with -3.17°, SNGn with -2.07°, gonial angle with -2.75°; AO-BO with 7.05mm, AFH with -3.68mm, PFH with 0.46mm, upper lip with -2.32mm, mandible lenght with -2.15mm, maxilla length with 2.86mm, and IFH with difference of 0.036. Thus we concluded that the surgical treatment was essential for the best relationship between of the maxilla and the jaw, and also for increasing the aesthetic part, although the greater number of the values obtained after the surgical correction show numbers kept in class 111 malocclusion facial patters
