RESUMO

The aim of this work is to understand the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park - located in the Northwest of Minas Gerais - as a practiced space. That means to focus on groups directly affected by or committed to its creation, such as the inhabitants of its area, the representatives of a non-governmental organization (Funatura) and of the Federal Bureau for Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama). Following the steps of these social actors - as well as their different speeches, memories and actions related to that place - it becomes possible to recognize multiple spaces, twisted by different time perceptions and rationalities. At first place, I discuss the ideal of national parks and the issue of traditional communities in such areas, formulating an approach, which is centered on spatial categories. This approach makes also possible to intersect the former discussion to the category of Sertão. Later, I take the local point of view, searching for earlier patterns of spatial occupation and social organization, before the implantation of the National Park. By the routes constructed together with this actors, the local memory and history and the new context of environment conservation, the idea of the National Park as a social space is reasserted
