RESUMO

This work compares the behavior of adjuntcts (and adjunctions) and discursive "fillers" in constituent boundaries of spoken and written Brazilian Portuguese, from the perspective of X-bar theory and other principIes that holds the Generative Theory. As a starting point, syntactic pattems of predication and complementation that forms the syntactic "background" were defined formally and elucidate positions, with attending restrictions, that the different kinds of "fillers" (syntatics and discursives) holds between constituent boundaries. The adjuncts examined referred only to non nuclear adjuncts such as adverbial phrases, adverbial clauses, topics and antitopics. Adjunction was understood as referring to a process which the constituent adjoins an X or XP position, directly by merge, such as adverbs that do not require movement or by movement for the "fillers" that occupy some positions by movement. This process included aspectual adverbs, clitics, some focus structures and floating quantifiers. In contrasting spoken and written language, the methodology followed previous works of the Grupo de Relações Gramaticais do Português Falado (Grammatical Relations of Spoken Portuguese Study Group) that analysed data using quantitative measures that considered the factor group as organizers of the universe sampled. The analysis showed that the major difference between spoken and written Portuguese, in terms of boundary "fillers", is displayed by filling in the margins whereas spoken language privileges the left margin and written language privileges the right margin. In addition, filling distribution displays that adjuncts are the "fillers" that occurs primarily in written language, whereas in spoken language more adjuncts and discursive "fillers" occur Finally, syntactic and discursive "fillers" displayed similar behavior in the two modalities, differing only in terms of percentages
