RESUMO

The electrokinetic method has been studied by a growing number of research centers, in application such as mining engineering, civil and environmental engineering, food and sports. To meet the application needs it was necessary to develop a new technology that combines a variety of materials, functions and processes for the implementation of specific activities. Its use has been common in materials under various conditions such as soil, sludge, slurry, solid waste, among others. Tests were carried out were inserting metal electrodes in vertical drains prefabricated to form the drain electrical conductor (DEC), which is the combination of electrokinetic phenomena with the traditional functions of drains (drainage, filtration, protection and enhancement). Both the DEC, as the prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), were investigated in physical models, at different scales, for the consolidation of tropical soil. Initially tests were performed in the laboratory, in an electro-osmotic cell, in order to optimize the main electro-osmotic parameters (voltage, current) in different environments of electrolyte concentrations (0, 16.5 and 33 g / L) and with other parameters such as type of electrode (copper or steel) and stress (50 and 100 kPa), proceeding then, with the application in a larger scale (experimental tanks) model. Two experimental tanks were used in the field trials with the conventional technique with PVD in one and DEC technology in the other, using the electro-osmosis in a normal and reverse modes. The variation of pore pressure and the development of settlements of the clay led to the conclusion that electricity directly contributes to accelerating the process of soil consolidation. The soil shear strength was measured before and after testing, where it was found that electrokinetics increased the soil strength. Energy consumption was found acceptable for the benefit that the method provided.
