RESUMO

Pervasive Developmental Disorders constitute a group of diseases characterized by changes that occurred at early ages and which are evident in communication, behavior and interpersonal relationship development. These changes are generically denominated as autistic characteristics. Diagnosis is basically clinical, that is, it is achieved though observation of the childs behavior and development. However, there are some tools that aid the professional in the follow-up and evaluation process of the childs development; among which is the Child Development Follow-Up Form, elaborated by Paravidini (2002), used to detect particular clinical manifestations tending to the evolution of autism. By knowing the developmental stages, professionals can work on preventive education and orientation along with parents, and also detect and register possible deviations, referring the child to specialized teams for diagnostic confirmation and adequate treatment. The goal of this study was to investigate the maternal outlook on Pervasive Developmental Disorders and, above all, to understand how detection and diagnosis of these disorders take place. For this, a quantifying and qualifying study was carried out with the help of twenty mothers of Pervasive Developmental Disorders carriers, after they had signed a informed consent term. Data were collected with the use of two tools: interview guidelines and the Child Development Follow-Up Form by Paravidini, 2002. The classification of the answers was achieved through content analysis, which enabled the identification of elements with a certain degree of homogeneity and those that gave a higher frequency of repetition. The results indicated that mothers are the ones who most commonly detected the early characteristic signs of Pervasive Developmental Disorders. They have a notion of the importance of diagnosis to begin the treatment. However they reveal little knowledge of the pathology. On the other hand, only a small number of professionals working in the child health field are apt to detect the early characteristic signs of such disorders. Also, these professionals either do not seem to be very well informed or they have not been transmitting the correct information to mothers as to the stages of child development and diagnosis. Hence, they need to be warned about this aspect and to gain more qualifications to deal with the issue. The Child Development Form by Paravidini was considered adequate by most mothers who were interviewed. The results show that the early detection of such disorders must be made a priority, in order to minimize its current and future effects, assuring the child affected by the disorder and his/her family a better life quality.
