RESUMO

The expressive growth of longevity in the whole world shows the need to understand oldness in all of its extent, taking into consideration its heterogeneous character under which each person organizes the own course of life, interiorizes values, establishes relationship with time and with the world and after all, builds his/her representations. The purpose of this work was to identify the representations of oldness elaborated in the mind of aged academic intellectual and the ways through which those symbolic processes are linked to the reality of everyday practices. In order to validate the study, the theory of social representations was chosen and, as the method for data collecting, the half-structured interview with a question guide previously established. The choice of subjects was aleatory being conditioned only to their assessibility. For the interpretation of declarations, the analysis of content was used. Through the use of this technique, the discursive segments emersed from the interviews were identified. The prevailing speeches were mapped and we tried to obtain meanings associated to categories inherent to the object of the study. Through the analysis of communicational contents, it was possible to reach to some conclusions: 1- Intellectual activity makes possible the communication of the interviewed with someone else and with the world ; 2- Literary practice makes the aged feel useful and recognized; 3- The social representations that the interviewed elaborated about oldness donÂt correspond to their way of living and donÂt feature their own conditions although they confirm oldness is a social product, elaborated under the effect of social, political and cultural influences
