RESUMO

The study of the alternation -ão::-on of the tonic nasal diphthong in Portuguese as it is spoken by Portuguese-Italian bilinguals of a rural community of São Marcos-RS is based on the theories of Linguistic Variation (Labov, 1969, 1983, 2001) and on Variation as Social Practice (Eckert, 2000, 2005). The extralinguistic variables Age, Schooling and Gender were important on the application of the -on rule. Among the linguistic variables, Number of Syllables in the Word and Precedent Phonological Context were relevant. The observation of practices in the family showed it is a tight group devoted to rural activities and which practices bilingualism. Parents are the ones in the family engaged in those activities and the ones producing more -on when speaking Portuguese. Their children, in opposition, engage in urban activities, have more schooling, integrate more monolingual groups and produce less -on. Despite being bilingual, mother produces less -on than father. Both engage in rural activities and have the same schooling degree, but it is mother who is in charge of daily contact with the children, with whom she speaks Portuguese.
