RESUMO

The concept most widely discussed in Social Sciences is Life Cycle. When it comes to the Management and Marketing fields, one derived concept is Family Life Cycle, meaning that over time all families go through a series of stages separated by predictable transitions as marriage, birth, death, exit of some element, retirement and others. The problem with Family Life Cycle concerns behavior and social differences between countries along time. Since the adopted theory is based solely in American data, how is it possible to apply the proper concept in Brazil, being in academic or commercial terms? This study aims to understand and apply one known model, adapted to Brazilian reality, through crossing theoretical frames about the subject with secondary data gathered by IBGE Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Among several approaches, the Gilly-Enis model was selected, since it has many favorable characteristics to apply on brazilian reality. Built with 13 stages and possible to follow paths through alternate flows and feedbacks, the Gilly-Enis model has several academic citations. To understand if this model is actually applied on brazilian market, data from 2006 National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) were explored and applied through crossing of variables to cover all depicted stages using Minitab 14 software as a tool. After the fulfillment of each stage with its corresponding percentage, the critical analysis showed its applicability, although some variables needed adjustments and two stages showed low representativeness applied upon the selected model. Further research is suggested to best adapt the model to the brazilian market through the breakdown of one stage and the collapse of two
