RESUMO

This dissertation presents a study on the graphic presentation of warnning signs in instruction manuals of electronic products commercialized in the Brazilian market in the years 2004 and 2005. Warning signs can be generically defined as the information given to users about possible negative consequences in order to avoid them happening (AYRES et al, 1989). A random sample of 200 signs, presented in the verbal and pictorial modes was analyzed, which covered 13 different products. Graphic and information variables were considered in the analytical study. The descriptive framework proposed by Spinillo (2000) to investigate the graphic presentation of the warning signs; the guidelines proposed by Wogalter, Desaulniers and Godfrey (1985) to verify the informational content; and Barthesâ (1964) and Bassyâs (1974)taxonomy to analyze the text x illustration relationship. The kinds of information present in the signs for safety were also classified in the study. The results pointed out that the warning signs present flaws, which were especially generated by the absence and by the inappropriate use of graphical and informational aspects (e.g., semantic marks, illustration style, signal word, indication of danger etc). As a consequence, the consumer may be exposed to loss, and/or the products may suffer damage, these may also lead to an inappropriate use of the product. Guidelines for the design of warning signs were proposed in order to minimize problems in their understanding, which were based review based on the results of the analytical study and on the literature. The dissertation indicates the need for further investigation on warning signs under the light of information design
