RESUMO

Quality of Sleep, stress and academic performance in adolescents using the computer at night. 2006. 234p. Orienting: Professor Doctor Rubens Nelson Amaral de Assis Reimão. Dissertation (Master degree) - State University of Campinas, Medical Sciences College, Health Department of Child and Adolescents. INTRODUCTION: Sleep is an important function in the life of humans, affecting physical, psychological and social conditions. It is closely related to rhythmic processes and disorders. Therefore, alterations in the amount and quality of sleep can result in impairment of daily activities. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of the nocturnal use of the computer on quality of sleep in a group of adolescents. The following variation factors are compared: nocturnal computer use, school periods, symptoms of stress, number of persons sleeping in the room, gender differences, and age brackets with the quality of sleep and academic performance among high school students METHOD: This research was conducted in two High-Schools situated in the center of Alfenas, a city in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The sample, for the initial investigation was composed of n=160 adolescents, predominantly females (65.63%), with ages ranging from 15 to 18 years. For this data we applied: a questionnaire for the computer use with the objective of collecting information about the number of hours spent on nocturnal use of the computer namely the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) used to quantify sleep quality; the Lipp Symptoms of Stress Inventory for Adults (ISSL) that objectively identifies symptoms of stress; and the students´ report cards, to record the students´ absences and grades. RESULTS: The data analysis using the Multiple Logistic Regression for the study of sleep quality displayed that nocturnal computer use (p=0.0062); and stress (p=0.0049), are the factors that most influence good sleep. The multiple variance analysis demonstrated that the factors: morning period (p.0082), female gender (p=0.0516), stress (p=0.0596) and the fewer number of absences (p=0.0012) influence academic performance. CONCLUSION: It was observed that nocturnal computer use is important in causing irregular sleep patterns, affecting sleep quality and mood. A way of improving sleep quality is by better sleep habits. In adolescents better sleep hygiene would include regular sleep patterns, avoiding excessive nocturnal computer use and maintaining length of sleep adequate for their age. Better sleep organization would not only improve sleep quality but also life quality
