RESUMO

This research aimed at investigating, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the features of expertsdrive for knowledge and its relationship with affective aspects built up during their lives. Particularly, it was identified their own perceptions about their drive for knowledge, as well as their families role in it. Besides, it was explored the features of the parental function in their expertise development. Finally, the relationship between object of knowledge and object of desire of experts were also explored. Participants were five medical doctors (cardiologists) with acknowledged expertise in their field. They were interviewed at length by means of clinical qualitative interview. Results suggest that in spite of the specificities of each discuss, there are common characteristics which allow to advance understanding the development of expert knowledge. For example, all participants had received the necessary paternal and maternal support and attention, which motivated their epistemological curiosity to enable them seek the knowledge they so thirsted. All appeared to have been extremely diligent scholars with an inherent ability to learn quickly. For them knowledge had always been a source of pleasure, so much that this pleasure trespassed medical knowledge into other non-related subjects, sustaining the drive for knowledge. This permanent quest for knowledge seems to be the result of the typical fault of the incomplete subject, that is to say, he or she who succeeded in working in his or her field of desire. Moreover, although clearly a great achievement, the choice of cardiology was originated from distinct roots, and incessantly managed to invade their personal lives currently. All participants demonstrated concern with the humane side of the profession, disregarding cold scientific doctor-patient relationship and the pure focus of financial rewards. In summary, all the experts interviewed in this study demonstrated that they could additionally develop expertise in other professions, as knowledge is their end gratification and pleasure, which excites their drive for knowledge.
