RESUMO

Braz;lian Portuguese ;s undergo;ng a process of change;n the representat;on of the pronominal referenda/ subject, which clearly sets it apart from European Portuguese and the other pro-drop languages, such as Spanish and Italian. Such a change can be related to the reduction of the inflectional paradigm, which evolved from six distinctive fonns to a paradigm showing no more than three distinctive endings, as a result of the replacement of the 1rs! person plural nós by the expression a gente, which combines with the T person singular verb fonn. As a consequence, the Avoid Pronoun PrincipIe that leads to the null representation of the subject whenever full identification is possible is lost, and the null subject becomes an infrequent option. The present study, based on the speech of 13 upper educated people, belong;ng to three different age groups, follows the track of the loss and makes it possible (a) to identify the contexts which were fírst defeated by the full pronominal variant, as well as the ones which still resist to it; (b) to confínn the implementation of the change through the comparison of the three age groups perfonnance; (c) to fínd evidences of the embedding of the change in the system, represented by the irrestrict use of left dislocated subjects - complete/y absent in the above mentioned pro-drop languages; and (d) to support the status of pro to the null subject in Brazílian Portuguese
