RESUMO

This dissertation bring the result of a research about the modern philosophical conception of childhood. the author is concerned wwith investigating a new idea of childhood to be found in a great number of the philosophical writings of G. Vico (1668-1744). In opposition to the traditional views, this idea recognizes cognitive value in children’s knowledge, which is to be included in the history of the development of reason. Vico defined childhood as the barbarian phsae of intellect, that’s to say, a precarious and at the same time imaginative moment in abstract reasoning. This new way of viewing childhood gave to children’s knowlege a logic of its own, namely a poetical logic. Childhood, seen under this perspective as a criative age, allowed the linkage between a new feeling of childhood and the birth of human sciences, because these ones have arised in XVIIIth century history topether with the discovery of childhood.
