RESUMO

The objective of this study is to analyze the image of the Northeast of Brazil that the Jornal do Brasil newspaper published about that region in the 1970s and the 1980s. It aims to verify how the social and political context influenced the social representations of the Brazilian Northeast within the national press. The study also aims to detect the way the journalistic field has contributed to the Northeastern construction of identity and to the reproduction of stereotypes. Finally, the paper intends to identify how the photographs and journalistic articles reveal daily life, the people, the politicians, the culture and the Northeastern economy. The research is of a qualitative, documental nature, built from analyses of the content of around 500 reports published in Jornal do Brasil about the region, produced by JBâs Recife branch. Its special annual supplement from 1975 to 1981, called Caderno Nordeste, was also examined. The study analyzes 60 photographs of the journalistic photographer Natanael Guedes, seeking to identify the social representations within the images and the way its photographic style and his commitment to the region interfere in the production of such images. The research based itself in contemporary sociological approaches and the idea of a multiple cultural identity; one which is contradictory, hybrid and mobile â as sustained by Stuart Hall, Manoel Castells, Ernesto Laclau, and Chantal Mouffe; the conception of the Northeast region as image and space, social representation identified in the work of Gilberto Freire, Josà Lins do Rego, Raquel de Queiroz, Graciliano Ramos, Durval Albuquerque, Djarcir de Menezes, Josuà de Castro; and the social field concept developed by Pierre Bourdieu, specifically the one of journalistic field and habits. The data reveals that the Northeast from the 1970s and the 1980s presents itself through images which are multifaceted, fragmented, hybrid, with deep social problems as, for instance, floods, drought and famine, but also showing a region that is rich and developing both economically and industrially. The images and reports portray a Northeast that protests, that knows what wants; a Northeast of rural exodus, but of politicians, artists and intellectuals of national projection. A Northeast filled with beautiful quiet warm water beaches and with diversified culture and gastronomy; A Northeast of peaceful people but that also goes on strike, fights and commits acts of violence; A northeast strategically located for the central government, but also that wants to be independent; A Northeast where the modern lives with the old; the present mingles with the past on a daily basis. The eye of the photographic reporter Natanael Guedes, the professional field of journalism, the editorial line of Jornal do Brasil, the political, economical and social setting of that time â it all contributed to the publishing of various Northeastern images that the JB showed in the 70s and the 80s. Therefore, the result is not a Brazilian Northeast â a region united and homogeneous â but a confluence of Brazilan Northeasts, a hybrid region that produces hybrid, heterogeneous, complex and contradictory identities
