RESUMO

This thesis tries to carry out an examination of A idade do serrote, an autobiography that comprehends Murilo Mendess childhood and youth recollections, taking as a point of departure the historic context in which it was conceived (written in Rome between 1965 and 1966, and published in 1968), as well as its links with the ethics and aesthetics qualities sustaining the authors poetic project. Murilos autobiography is understood as an account of resistance against the affronted world, an account grounded on two fully intertwined procedures: first, the poeticization of remembrances, rendered through the authors catholic and surrealist lenses, aiming at creating a miraculous atmosphere, shaped on the sacralization of everyday life and the unremitting search of a different reality (un autre réel); and, second, the making up of the hero-narrator, a process which is tantamount to his encounter with an assortment of misfit characters and leads up to his depiction as an enfant terrible a key term in the poets personal mythology
