RESUMO

On the formation of the earthly crust, several minerals gather and make up different kinds of rocks. Nature itself is in charge of consuming the rocks which are on the surface, by elaborating several relievo physionomies. Drainage is separated by hydrographic basins. Ipojuca river hydrographic basin, created thanks to the great failure known as Pernambucano lineament, has suffered a loto of action by the weathering, provoking decomposition and desintegration of minerals of the rocks. The decomposed or fragmented material has suffered displacement, carried by surface Waters. This material was stored on the Banks of Rivers and streamlets. Important deposits heaped up by the Banks of Ipojuca river between Caruaru and SÃo Caitano cities which are the Agreste of Pernambuco. The material deposit of tinner granulometry (clay) made itself up on a thicker material (sand). Such clay, with quite accentuated plastic haracteristics, was first used onto the elaboration of utilitarian pieces, such as: dishes, glasses, pans and thick bricks, products given to home uses. With the populational increase of Caruaru, utilitarian products were sold in the open-air market and the production of bricks and tiles was intensifield to assist the increasing search for building material. By taking advantage of the same moldable mass with which his family made pans, in 1915, the little boy Vitalino Pereira dos Santos made up one piece representing a hunt for a bush cat whose hunter was accompanied by dogs and aiming his riffle at the cat. From then on, Born was the figurative handcraft of clay from Alto do Moura, consegrating both Vitalino as one of the most important artists of Brazil and Alto do Moura as âThe Greatest Center of Figurative Handcrafts of Americasâ. The beds of clay, used by handcraftsmen of utilitarian and figurative pieces and also by brick and common tiles makers, had started being sold to several hollowed bricks and English-like tiles productors since the 40âs, being intensified more and more the use of such raw-material and prohibiting handcraftsmen approach. As clay beds drained and the access to some clay areas was forbidden, handcraftsmen were obbliged to buy clay from private land-owners whose land reserves diminished more and more, making these workersâ future uncertain
