A comunicação científica e a bioética brasileira : uma análise dos periódicos científicos brasileiros

RESUMO

This is a social and exploratory investigation aimed at analyzing the role of scientific journals in the definition and development of bioethics in Brazil. The research was conducted using a combination of data collection techniques, such as survey, questionnaires, and open interviews from August 2007 to August 2008. The research project was approved by the University of Brasilia Human Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Two Brazilian scientific journals in bioethics, 1 in medicine, and 6 in public health, besides 150 authors, 13 editors, and 6 reviewers participated in the research. The data were submitted to documental analysis, statistical analysis, content analysis, and to elements within Grounded Theory. The theoretical discussion and the interpretation of the data were based on specialized literature on scientific communication and sociology of science, mainly the studies on scientific journals, scientific edition, peer review, together with the notions of scientific field and political disputes within the scientific community presented by Pierre Bourdieu. The results showed that: 1) during the phases of institutionalization and academicization of bioethics, the first specialized journals were created which gave the field visibility; 2) the low quality of specialized journals may compromise the fields current phase of consolidation; 3) bioethics is susceptible to influences from more consolidated fields, such as medicine and health, which are, however, counterbalanced by social sciences and humanities; 4) to keep high levels of quality of the journals under their responsibility, editors depend on good articles provided by authors; therefore, there is a balance of forces between editors and authors, contrary to the idea that editors had more power due to their decision authority.
