RESUMO

The aim of the present study is to analyze the cause-and-effect relationship in a real spoken interaction situation, which is a business meeting in a real estate agency. The analysis has been based on three vantage points for the study of the causality phenomenon: the expression forms, the types and the function, which is not appropriately covered by the traditional grammars. Beside these, the most recent grammars called grammars of use were researched, with the aim of appointing research ways that could widen the treating of these phenomena, which appear in a relevant manner in situations of language use. The methodology utilized consisted in underlining the occurrences of causality in the meeting transcription, held in a real estate agency, with seven partners, according to recent linguistic proposals that approach mainly the pragmatic nature of causality, which involves questions of institutional status and the redressing of speech acts. Some of the researchers who have adopted this orientation are: Chafe (1992), Ford (1994 e 2000), Givón (1979), Gohl (2000), Holtgraves (1998), Jordan (1998), Long (1996), Maat (2000), Meyer (2000), Noordman (2000), Ochs (1979), Oversteegen (1997), Schilperoord (1998), Schleppegrell (1992), Spooren (1997), Sweetser (1990), Thompson (1988) e Verstraete (1998). The study showed that there are forms of expression and types of causality that are not addressed by the grammars used in Brazilian schools, as well as the function of causality, which is hardly studied at all. The study also showed that there are many aspects of causality that could be studied in a wider manner, so that the teaching of this phenomenon may be based on more comprehensive theories
