RESUMO

This study investigates the impact of the Miniempresa (Micro Company) Program on schools, in order to promote a discussion focused on improving its suitability, purposes, structure and operation, during 2006. The research takes a qualitative approach, based on the program assessment methodology proposed by Saul (1994), which takes the form of three interactive stages: description and criticism of the reality, and collective creation. The analysis of documents related to the Miniempresa Program, bibliographic research, the application of questionnaires to students, volunteers and directors of the selected schools, interviews with former students who have participated in the program in previous years, participant observation of the three Micro Companies chosen by the researcher, and content analysis were used to formulate the analyses about the contributions and limitations of the Miniempresa Program. The data indicate that most of the proposals of the program were achieved during 2006, and that most of the people involved were satisfied in relation to their participation and learning. The curriculum of the Miniempresa Program has made a significant contribution to the development of skills and attitudes, and the standard of performance considered desirable is recognized by those involved in the program. However, it was observed that the volunteer training is not very effective. The analysis indicates a need to improve the training, and the procedures for the registration and selection of teaching material provided by Junior Achievement. It is understood that the selection of students for the program should be carried out by the coordinators of the schools, and it should be emphasized to companies that the voluntary work should be should be done at the free will of the volunteer, in order to avoid the situation seen today. Additionally, the support of the schools is seen as vital for the smooth running of the project. The need for improvement should be achieved through a joint effort, since the efforts of one party alone cannot guarantee an improvement in quality of the Miniempresa Program
